How much income do I need to get a credit card?

Answer in brief

The income you need to get a credit card is not set by law as a single figure. An issuer must consider whether you can make the required minimum payments, given your income or assets and debts.

What does the rule actually require of issuers?

Under Regulation Z, a card issuer must not open a credit card account, or raise a credit limit, unless it considers the consumer's ability to make the required minimum payments, using the consumer's income or assets and current debts. Issuers must keep reasonable written policies for this review, and those policies must include at least one of three measures: debt compared to income, debt compared to assets, or the income left over after paying debts.

This means an issuer is looking at a relationship between numbers, not at income alone. Someone with a modest income and few debts can look better on these measures than someone with a higher income and heavy payments. The rule does not publish a floor, and an issuer's own criteria may go well beyond this minimum.

How should you report your income on an application?

Answer accurately and be prepared to support what you enter. Read how the application defines income, as the wording varies, and leave out anything that does not fit its definition. If your income is irregular, use a figure you could defend from your records rather than your best month.

Applicants under 21 have a tighter rule. Regulation Z requires an independent ability to make the required minimum payments, or a cosigner, guarantor or joint applicant of at least 21 who can show the ability to pay, as the under-21 guide explains.

What if your debts are the problem?

If your debts are high relative to your income, it can help to pay some down before you apply. The FTC lists the amount of debt compared to credit limits among the scoring factors, so a lower balance can help on two fronts: the issuer's ability-to-pay review and your score. Do the sum on your actual budget first. If a new card's minimum payment would strain you, that is a reason not to apply yet, whatever the issuer might decide.
