Applying for a card when you are under 21

Answer in brief

Card companies generally cannot issue a card to anyone under 21 unless the applicant can show an independent ability to meet the payments or someone over 21 co-signs the account.

The general rule

The CFPB says credit card companies generally cannot issue credit cards to anyone under 21 unless they can show an independent ability to meet payment obligations or someone over 21 co-signs the account. In practice this creates two routes for a younger applicant, and it is worth working out which one you are on before you spend time comparing cards.

The focus on an independent ability to pay means you should be ready to describe your own income accurately. Fill in the application truthfully, and answer only with what you can stand behind. If an amount is uncertain or varies from month to month, use a figure you could support if the issuer asked you about it.

If someone will co-sign

A co-signer takes on a real commitment, and it is worth treating the conversation as a serious one. Agree in advance how the card will be used, who will make the payments, and what happens if you cannot pay in a given month. Late payments on a shared account can harm more than one person, so a co-signer should know exactly what they are agreeing to before anyone fills in a form.

Not every issuer accepts a co-signer, so check before you build a plan around one. If this route is closed, the alternative is to wait until you can show your own ability to pay, or to look at whether a secured card would be available to you and affordable on your own income.

What to do first

Start the same way as any other applicant, with your credit report and a clear idea of what you want the card for. A younger applicant may have little or no history, so the file may be short. That is normal, and it is a reason to choose a simple card you can manage rather than chase a product built for someone with a long record.

Keep the spending small and pay in full every month if you can. Since payment history and length of credit history are both among the factors the FTC lists for scoring systems, an account opened early and handled well can be useful for years. The score factors guide explains the rest.
